Zara Raab's poems evoke the rainy darkness of the remote northern California coast where she and her family have lived for almost two hundreds years. They are collected in The Book of Gretel and Swimming the Eel, and now in a third book, Fracas & Asylum, which continues her journey through inner and outer landscapes characterized by alternating moods of storm, seclusion and reverie. A fourth book, finalist for the Dana Award and based on the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, is due out in 2013.

Zara Raab handles form so skillfully that I was often unaware that I was reading a form poem. She offers a wonderful variety of forms throughout this collection, e.g., sonnets, ballads, quatrains, couplets, and syllabics. She has a sensitive ear for sounds as seen/heard in such rhymes as "lied" and "line," "died" and "disguise," and "survival" and "crucial." She covers a range of topics--the aftermath of divorce, the death of a friend, and the California landscape with its eucalyptus and pine trees, its rainy seasons. Raab has a gift for the things of this earth, seen, for example, in one of my favorite poems, "Carrots," a sonnet with delightful rhymes ( "flora" and "Formica," "o'clock" and "hemlock," "despots" and "carrots") and a charming closing couplet: "Their leafy, little tufts wave in the air, / saying, 'Dig up this grave,' saying, 'Pull here.'"
