Mike and Jean found one another in a most unorthodox way. Mike was a Roman Catholic priest, who struggled with his vow of chastity but wanted to remain in the priesthood. Jean was a widow, a Catholic intent on obeying the laws of the Church. After much soul searching with each other and discussion within their spiritual support group, they publicly entered into a celibate love relationship.
Mike had his first sexual experience not very long after his ordination, when he got involved with a married woman ten years older than himself. Once he had experienced the ecstasy of being with a woman, there was no turning back, nor could he bring himself to give up his vocation. He continued to be sexually involved throughout his priesthood; that is, until he met Jean.
He was looking for a way to be true to his vows, yet meet his need to love and be loved. Jean was a strong, virtuous woman, who had always lived on the straight and narrow and seemed to be just the right companion.
About the Author
Mike Conley received a Master of Science in chemistry and a Master of Science in Administration from the University of Notre Dame. He was a Roman Catholic priest in the Congregation of Holy Cross for twenty-one years and has taught high school science in parochial and public schools.
Jean Conley holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in human behavior and a Master of Theology in contemporary Christianity. She has had life coach training and authored a book on the subject of self-image, entitled Coach Your Way to a Great Self-Image.
Mike and Jean reside in La Quinta, California, where they are administrators of an online university that offers ministerial and theological degrees. They have been married for over twenty years and continue to have a passionate love relationship.

This book by Mike and Jean Conley, a former Catholic priest and a widow with 3 children respectively, is a highly vulnerable and self-disclosing look into a twenty-plus year marriage and the factors that led to their meeting and eventually building an intimate and committed loving partnership.The book Dedication states, "This book is dedicated to the free spirits of the world who want to believe in the power of love." Those of us who have had doubts about the ability of couples to sustain passion, kindness, and intimacy over many years of daily interaction will find hope in this short, 124-page book for long-term connection and mutual emotional/spiritual growth.
This is a much more intimate look inside one couple's relationship than even the Harville Hendrix bestseller,"Getting the Love You Want" and therefore for many people of even greater value.
Mike and Jean alternate writing the book, each describing in 4 chapters major childhood factors such as parental pressure, Catholic values, and sibling competition that influenced their distinct paths which finally merged in 1982. It is a well-written "dual-memoir", with depth and humor, and interspersed personal photos bring it all the more to life. They each reveal multiple challenges to their relationship including the emotional pain caused by the abandonment of many of their friends as Mike decides to leave the priesthood to marry Jean due to the love and intimate connection they share.
Our society seems to have a difficult time merging emotional connection and sexual intimacy, on the one end of the spectrum there is titillating, superficial sexuality while at the other end is puritanical repression. Mike and Jean write however,"Without a doubt there is a strong physical attraction between us, but we are also kindred spirits, soul mates,and know first-hand the power of love. We believe it is our call to be a sign of love to the world... that is, two people with a very real and intense relationship who are willing to embrace the struggle and vulnerability to stay in a love that grows deeper with time."
Their courageous decision to break cultural and religious restraints because of their love for one another is a true inspiration for anyone searching for more connection in a relationship as well as a more meaningful life. As they write on the final page,"In the last analysis, our lives will be judged not on how well we have kept the rules, but rather, on how deeply we love one another."

This is one of the worst books I have ever read. This is a very controversial topic and I was open to hearing the Conley's side. However, they chose not to address it directly and instead danced around it.
